Udbodhan Publication

Udbodhan Office, the premier publishing house for the spread of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature, initially brought out the life and works of Swami Vivekananda and others in article form in the magazine and later on published them as books.

Swamiji’s “Raja Yoga” in Bengali is the first book brought out by the Udbodhan Office in 1899. In early 1900, “Bhakti Yoga” and some months later, “Karma Yoga” were brought out. They were all translated from English.

Karma Yoga in English was published in February 1896 from New York and Raja Yoga was published from London in July of the same year. Bhakti Yoga was brought out from Madras in 1896. Immediately after their publication in Bengali, they were published in English too, from Udbodhan. In 1910, “The Masteras I saw Him” by Sister Nivedita, was brought out simultaneously from England and Udbodhan.

By 1902 the following books of Swamiji had been published:

Bengali:
Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Chicago Addresses.

English:
Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Chicago Addresses, Letters and Conversations.

Shortly afterwards, the serial “The East and the West” which had appeared in the Udbodhan was published in book form. The first volume of “Kathamrita” (Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna in original Bengali) was first published in 1902.

Swami Shuddhananda’s contribution in publishing these books is unforgettable. From the outset he had started translating the works of Swamiji in addition to helping in publishing the Udbodhan magazine. He translated nearly the entire Complete Works of Swamiji single-handed. Although the translations were quite literal, his own language was sweet yet powerful. The works of Swamiji that is available in Bengali is the result of Swami Shuddhananda’s untiring labour and brilliance.

“Sri Ramakrishna Leela Prasanga” – the authoritative biography of Sri Ramakrishna in Bengali by Swami Saradananda, brought out by Udbodhan is a unique contribution to the world of literature. In addition to this “Yuga Nayak Vivekananda”, Sri Ma Sarada Devi”, “Sri Ramakrishna Bhakta Malika” and other such books has contributed immensely to the world of Bengali literature. Many such valuable and important books on Ramakrishna- Vivekananda ideals are being brought out by Udbodhan regularly. A new edition of Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita with an index of songs, stories, etc. has published. “Vedanta Darshan”, a very important treatise, in four volumes on Vedanta, “Visva Chetanay Sri Ramakrishna” and some other equally important hooks has been published recently.
